Frankincense and Cancer Prevention
Frankincense (Boswellia carteri) may be a good candidate for prevention of cancer and cancer
metastasis. A study done by Zhao et al. (2003) published in Cancer Detection and Prevention
found that a substance called BC-4, an isomeric compound isolated from Boswellia carteri, may
reduce cancerous cell production and metastasis (spread of cancerous cells from one part of the

Helichrysum italicum is a plant found in dry, sandy areas of the Mediterranean and is known for its
anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-microbial properties. Several studies have evaluated
these relationships, and results are overwhelmingly positive. In a study done by Nostro et al.
(2001) they looked at inhibitory effect on growth of Staphylococcus aureus with Helichrysum
italicum. They found that Helichrysum italicum did inhibit growth of S. aureus and several of its
enzymes. Also, Sala et al. (2002) determined in vitro and in vivo anti-inflammatory and antioxidant
activities with Helichrysum italicum. This study concluded inflammatory enzyme inhibition, free-
radical scavenging activity, and corticoid-like effects determined the anti-inflammatory effects of
